WINNIPEG — The Queen has landed in Manitoba.

Queen Elizabeth II and her royal entourage touched down in Winnipeg shortly after noon Saturday, and promptly became the first official passengers to arrive at the new terminal — which is still several months from completion — at the James A. Richardson Winnipeg International Airport.

The Queen appeared to flash a small and humble smile when airport CEO Barry Rempel informed the crowd of her status as the terminal's first passenger.

The Queen, dressed in a purple dress and hat, white gloves and black shoes, wearing a pearl necklace, a brooch on her left shoulder and carrying a black purse, walked slowly into the terminal amid a hushed awe from the crowd of several hundred sweaty onlookers. The air conditioning system, apparently, is one aspect of the terminal that has yet to be completed.

The Queen shook hands with a few Royal Canadian Air Force veterans, including Col. Ernie Harris, former commanding officer of 402 air reserve squadron, and his wife Eva, who said she was very happy to have met the monarch.

"I'm a few months older than the Queen, we were married the same year and our first child was born the same year as Prince Charles, so we definitely identify with the Queen," she said.

After helping seal a time capsule the Queen proceeded down an escalator, where she was met by two 10-year-old girls — the great granddaughters of aviation pioneers Tom Lamb and James A. Richardson — who handed her a bouquet of roses.

"I was thinking 'Wow, most people don't get to do this,' " said Caledon Lamb, one of the two flower girls. "I'm feeling great."

The Queen has stops to make later Saturday afternoon at Government House and The Forks before jetting off for Toronto.
